Manchester United were fortunate to even secure a point after a poor performance in their 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday night.
Erik ten Hag's side knew they needed a positive result following wins for both Aston Villa and Tottenham earlier in the day but did not produce a performance that warranted the three points in London.
Brentford were the better side for much of the contest and really should have headed into the break with a lead to show for it after they hit both the post and crossbar. United's hopes were dealt another blow when key defender Raphael Varane was withdrawn through injury at half-time, though there was a slight improvement from their side when Rasmus Hojlund saw a close range effort saved well by Mark Flekken. Moments later, it was time for Andre Onana to steal the show when he produced a superb double save to deny Brentford what would have been a thoroughly deserved lead in the match.
There was another injury concern when Victor Lindelof was taken off after going down in pain, with Lisandro Martinez making his long-awaited return from the bench to replace him. It did little to strengthen the United backline though, with Ivan Toney finding the back of the net with a goal that was disallowed for offside and Bryan Mbuemo firing a ferocious shot against the crossbar.
United looked to have won the game when Mason Mount scored against the run of play deep into stoppage time but moments later Brentford finally got the goal they deserved when Kristoffer Ajer fired home from close range.
