Manchester United player ratings: Four heroic 8/10s save 'horrendous' 3/10 in epic Lyon Europa League win

Man Utd player ratings from the epic Europa League victory over Lyon at Old Trafford.

Harry Maguire was the hero as Manchester United defeated Lyon 5-4 in an epic Europa League tie on Thursday night. United started well and didn’t have to wait long for a goal when Manuel Ugarte fired home in front of the Stretford End after a superb assist from Alejandro Garnacho. The next goal felt crucial and United got it on the stroke of half-time when Diogo Dalot latched onto a brilliant long ball and fired into the bottom corner to put his side firmly in control of the tie.

United should have had a third after the break when Garnacho fired straight at Lucas Perri from close range. It came back to haunt them as Corentin Tolisso and Nicolás Tagliafico struck to wipe out their lead and level the tie again. There was another twist when Tolisso was sent off for a second yellow card as the game went to extra-time, but it was the 10 men of Lyon who took the lead when the excellent Rayan Cherki drilled an effort into the bottom corner.

The visitors doubled their lead through an Alexandre Lacazette penalty, but United struck three times in the second half of extra time to secure an incredible comeback and book their place in the semi-finals. Here is how we rated the United players:

Andre Onana

He made some important stops in the United goal, but there was nothing he could really do about any of the goals. A night where he wasn’t the headline for a change. 7

Noussair Mazraoui

United’s unsung hero of the season. Calm and composed on the ball, and played a key role in the opener. It was a concern to see him withdrawn at half-time. 7

Harry Maguire

A few vital blocks in the box to deny Lyon a goal in the first half. He redeemed some poor defensive work in the second-half with an unbelievable winner. 8

Leny Yoro

A few awkward moments with his positioning, but that’s understandable given his age. He was bullied by the Lyon forwards as the match went on. 4

Diogo Dalot

He took his goal brilliantly and linked up well on the right. He relished the freedom he had at wing-back and worked tremendously hard throughout. 7

Manuel Ugarte

Good composure and awareness for the opening goal. He covered every blade of grass in what was a great midfield performance, but lost a grip on proceedings in the second half. 7

Casemiro

Almost doubled the lead with a brilliant low effort. His calm and measured passing linked up play neatly in midfield. He won the penalty for United in extra time and set-up their last two goals. 8

Patrick Dorgu

He was run ragged by Rayan Cherki and did not provide enough defensive protection. He was better going forward, but didn’t do half of his job. He should have done better for Lyon’s first two goals. 4

Alejandro Garnacho

He produced a brilliant assist to give United the early lead, but his unacceptable miss should have sealed the win. A frustrating performance. 6

Bruno Fernandes

Exactly what you’d expect from him. The heartbeat of the United side and a constant attacking outlet. Almost scored a sensational volley that hit the bar and was clinical from the penalty spot. 8

Rasmus Hojlund

A slightly better performance from him, which isn’t saying much. He worked hard and improved with his hold-up play, but never really got into the game. It said so much that he was eventually replaced by a midfielder. 5

How the United substitutes rated against Lyon

Luke Shaw

A horrendous substitution that backfired. He looked off the pace for the third goal and conceded a penalty in extra-time. 3

Mason Mount

His introduction was long overdue as United looked to lift the spirits when the scores were level again. United were better with him on the pitch. 7

Kobbie Mainoo

It said so much about the state of United that they relied on him as a striker. He worked hard in the role and scored a stunning goal. 8

Christian Eriksen

United somehow lost control of the match when he was introduced. He didn’t do much of note in what was a frantic finale to proceedings. 5

Harry Amass

He played with freedom on the left and almost snatched an unlikely winner at the back-post. He always provided an option on the left. 6
