Man Utd were handed an injury blow in their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Joshua Zirkzee has been ruled out of Manchester United's upcoming Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon. United know their season relies on defeating the French side on Thursday night as they go in search of a piece of silverware and Champions League qualification.

It is almost certain United will record their worst ever season in the Premier League, though they could yet qualify for the Champions League if they win the Europa League. Ruben Amorim acknowledged the upcoming clash with Lyon was more important than their weekend defeat to Newcastle and made five changes to his starting line up for the trip to the North East.

Zirkzee was one of those who came into the starting line up for the match, but he has already been ruled out for the upcoming match after he suffered a hamstring injury against Newcastle. The Dutch forward pulled up and clutched his hamstring after he had made an impressive run in the second half. He immediately asked to be withdrawn and was replaced by Rasmus Hojlund.

Ruben Amorim issues Joshua Zirkzee injury update

Speaking after the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim issued an update on Joshua Zirkzee. In a post-match chat with BeINSports, he confirmed the Dutch forward would not be available to face Lyon on Thursday night, while he confirmed to MUTV that he would be sidelined for the next few weeks at the very least.

"We had to make rotation because we are trying to recover in two days from each game," he said. "But trying to win this game also. Josh, I think he will be out for some games. So, let’s focus on the next one."

It means United are set to only have one senior striker available for their crucial clash against Lyon, with Chido Obi ineligible to feature in the Europa League and Rasmus Hojlund the only fit striker.

United host Lyon on Thursday night before a Premier League home match against Wolves this weekend. Amorim's side then travel to Bournemouth on Sunday 27 April, with a potential Europa League semi-final first leg against either Rangers or Athletic Club on Thursday 1 May.
