Manchester United player ratings: Four 'dreadful' 4/10s but one 7/10 caught the eye in heavy Newcastle defeat

Man Utd player ratings from the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League.

Alejandro Garnacho was one of few positives for Manchester United as they were beaten 4-1 by Newcastle in the Premier League. Ruben Amorim made five changes to the side that drew with Lyon in midweek as Altay Bayindir replaced Andre Onana and Harry Amass made his first start for the club.

United started as the better of the two sides but failed to take their chances and were emphatically punished when Sandro Tonali volleyed the home side ahead midway through the first half. It was then Newcastle’s turn to be punished for some wasteful finishing when Alejandro Garnacho drew United level with a fine goal on the counter-attack.

Amorim’s side gave a decent account of themselves but paid the price for countless individual errors, as a Harvey Barnes brace and a Bruno Guimaraes finish secured a comfortable victory for the home side. Here is how we rated the United players against Newcastle:

Manchester United player ratings vs Newcastle

Altay Bayindir

A lot was made of his selection, and he didn’t justify it. He produced a superb double stop to deny Alexander Isak a goal but was almost entirely at fault for the fourth goal. 5

An unfortunate goal that gifted Newcastle a third goal. He had played well before he was emphatically punished for a rare mistake. 5

He could have done better for both the second and third goals. This was a reminder of why he is a backup option at the very best. 4

He was calm on the ball but guilty of switching off for the second Newcastle goal. Booked at the end of the first half in what was a poor performance. 5

A great assist for Garnacho’s equaliser, but he was beaten far too easily for the second. Another match that reminded us he is a short-term solution at wing-back. 4

Manuel Ugarte

His passing has been dreadful throughout his time at the club, and he was careless again. He redeemed himself somewhat with his work for the Garnacho goal. A thankless task playing alongside Eriksen. 4

Christian Eriksen

He largely looked off the pace and was beaten too easily in midfield on several occasions. He’s a rather ineffectual option and looks certain to leave this summer. 4

Harry Amass

A decent debut with one excellent attacking run. He looked a little lost as a wing-back rather than a full-back, but he will only get better with time. 6

Alejandro Garnacho

He was United’s best attacker and took his goal well. Finally got the reward for his hard work in recent weeks. It made sense to take him off in the second half to protect him for Lyon. 7

Bruno Fernandes

Not as influential as usual, but he still created a great chance for Zirkzee. He might be better as a central midfielder for the rest of the campaign. 5

Joshua Zirkzee

He didn’t offer enough physicality in the forward line and looked a little loss. United’s best play came from his quick interchanges but there weren’t enough of them. Should have scored. 5

An ineffective appearance from the bench. It is hard to recall anything he did of note during his time on the pitch. 5

United hardly had the ball in an attacking position when he was on the pitch and he was rarely involved. Sent a tame effort at Nick Pope. 6

Rasmus Hojlund

A match in which he never stood a chance. The contest was over shortly after he was introduced and he couldn’t have done anything with the little service he had. 6

It was good to see him back on the pitch again and it looks like he will play the role of a centre-back under Amorim. 6

Kobbie Mainoo

The match was over by the time he came on. It was a case of him gaining some more precious minutes of match fitness before he can be unleashed again. 6
