Man Utd sold Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica in the summer transfer window but included a buyback clause in the deal.

Manchester United could grab themselves a bargain by bringing Alvaro Fernandez back to the club in the future.

The Portuguese club initially signed the full-back on loan in January before they activated an option from that agreement to sign Fernandez permanently in a €6million deal plus an additional €3m in potential add-ons.

As part of the deal, United also included a sell-on and a buy-back clause to ensure they protected his long-term valuation given that he was sold for an initial low fee.

ManchesterWorld understand that while the general release clause in Fernadez's deal stands at €50 million, United negotiated their own individual buyback clause for a much lower fee. United can activate their right to buyback Fernandez for as little as €20m and they have another two years in which to trigger it before it expires in the 2026 summer transfer window.

At this stage, it still seems unlikely United will bring Fernandez back to the club so soon after he left, but his buyback clause could be used to make a quick profit on the academy graduate, rather than use him for themselves.

With reports of interest from the likes of both Real Madrid and Liverpool, United could feasibly bring Fernandez back to the club for €20m and then sell him immediately for a profit to another club.

The decision to sell Fernandez without ever making his senior debut is a contentious one when United remain without both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia due to injury.
