Manchester United host Sheriff Tiraspol this week, and a point in the clash would be enough to secure the Red Devils’ passage to the next stage of the competition.

Erik ten Hag’s side have picked up nine points from the opening four matches and beat Sheriff 2-0 when the sides met in September, with Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo netting the goals. But it’s been a tumultuous period for the latter over recent weeks, with Ronaldo not selected for the recent game against Chelsea after storming from the bench in the win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Portuguese forward is expected to return to the team for the upcoming game, after he was spotted in training on Tuesday. Meanwhile, given the hectic fixture schedule, Ten Hag may be tempted to rotate for this fixture.

The Red Devils came through a tough run of games against Newcastle United, Spurs and Chelsea without suffering defeat, and face a home clash with West Ham United on Sunday.

As for Sheriff, their manager, Stjepan Tomas, resigned earlier this week in a shock move. It means he won’t be in charge for the trip to Old Trafford, with Sheriff picking up three points so far in the group.

United are expected to be without French duo Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial. The latter hasn’t played since 9 October and Varane was replaced in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the weekend, with initial reports suggesting he could be out for a few weeks.

In better news, however, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Brandon Williams and Donny van de Beek all returned to training over the last week, but it’s not clear yet if any of the quartet will be fit to start on Thursday.

Ronaldo returned to training this weekend and it will be intriguing to see if Ten Hag hands him an immediate return to the team, something the Dutchman may be tempted to do in order to rotate other attacking players

As for Sheriff, they will be without Armel Zohouri following the red card he received two weeks ago in the loss to Real Sociedad.

Prediction

This should be a relatively straightforward encounter for the Red Devils. Sheriff didn’t pose much of a threat when the side last met and United are playing with more confidence and even with a little swagger now.

Our prediction: United 3-0 Sheriff
