Manchester United could be without Marcus Rashford for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United.

The attacker went off in the latter stages of the midweek win over Barcelona and sparked injury concerns by removing his boot as he made his round of the outside of the pitch, before being filmed limping out of Old Trafford after the game. And speaking on Friday, Erik ten Hag revealed he is not certain if Rashford will be fit to play at Wembley this weekend.

“I don’t know. Players are now coming in [to training], we have to do investigations, medical,” said the United manager. “Of course yesterday we did but so straight after a game most of the time you can’t say.

“We have to wait for medical and 100 percent diagnosis. Let’s do the medical work - we have to wait.”

Ten Hag also confirmed in Friday’s pre-match press conference that Anthony Martial has not recovered from a hip problem in time and won’t be available. Long-term absentees Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek won’t be involved.

As for Newcastle, they have a plethora of injury and suspension concerns. Nick Pope is the main absentee for the Magpies, with the goalkeeper dismissed in last week’s loss to Liverpool and is therefore suspended for the final.

That is only compounded by Martin Dubravka being ineligible for Sunday’s game, ironically as he played for United in two Carabao Cup matches this season while on loan at Old Trafford. Therefore, third-choice stopper Loris Karius is expected to start in nets for Eddie Howe’s side.

Like Dubravka, Anthony Gordon is not allowed to play after he featured for Everton in the previous rounds, while Emile Kraft and Matty Longstaff are both out for extended periods due to knee injuries.

Elsewhere, Joe Willock is a doubt with Howe describing the former Arsenal man as ‘touch and go’ for the weekend, although he was spotted in training during the week and will likely return for the cup final.

Joelinton is also expected to be involved despite going off with a knock against Liverpool, while Matt Targett could be back in a matchday squad for the first time since Boxing Day as he has recovered from a heel issue and played in an Under-21 match last week.

“Certainly, Matt Targett’s improved a lot,” said Howe earlier in the week. “He had a game at the weekend and [we’re] really pleased with his fitness. I was really pleased with what he did, so I’d say yeah, he’ll be available for selection.”

Doubts: Rashford (United); Willock (Newcastle)

Ruled out: Eriksen, Van de Beek, Martial (United); Pope, Dubravka, Krafth, M.Longstaff, Gordon (Newcastle)
