Manchester City are missing a defender through suspension, while Manchester United are expecting a midfielder to return.

Manchester United and Manchester City came through their respective midweek Champions League matches without picking up any new injuries, ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby.

United’s 1-0 victory over Copenhagen means they still have an outside chance of progressing to the last-16 stage of the competition, with Andre Onana and Harry Maguire the surprise heroes at Old Trafford.

United welcomed Sergio Reguilon back into the side on Tuesday - his first game since 23 September - and the on-loan defender’s return will come as a big boost for Erik ten Hag, who has been forced to play Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat in the full-back role over recent weeks. That shouldn't be the case against City though, with Reguilon likely to start.

But Ten Hag said on Friday that he is unsure if Casemiro will be available for Sunday’s encounter. The Brazilian missed last week’s win over Sheffield United through injury and was suspended for the Champions League encounter on Tuesday.

Casemiro has trained all week and it was presumed he would an option to face City. But speaking in his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag said: "Casa is a race against the clock. [He's] not 100 percent."

Kobbie Mainoo may also return to the squad after playing 45 minutes for the Under-19s on Tuesday, although he could be omitted for the derby if United continue to ease him back into competitive action. Meanwhile, the Red Devils remain without the injured Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Amad, while Jadon Sancho is also still not an option as he has been frozen out of the first-team squad.

As for City, Manuel Akanji is suspended and not available for the champions. The Swiss defender, who scored for City in the midweek win at Young Boys, was sent off against Brighton & Hove Albion. But along with the long-term absentee of the injured Kevin De Bruyne, Akanji is the only player missing for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Catalan boss rested Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden in Switzerland, while Bernardo Silva and Julian Alvarez came off the bench in the latter stages of the 3-1 win. All five are expected to start at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Doubts: Casemiro, Mainoo (United). Out: Wan-Bissaka, Martinez, Shaw, Malacia, Amad, Sancho (United). Akanju, De Bruyne (City).
