Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro were surprise returnees to Manchester United training on Monday.

Both were spotted at Carrington ahead of the Champions League encounter against Copenhagen, a match the Red Devils realistically need to win if they have any hopes of qualifying for the last-16 stage of the Champions League. However, neither Malacia or Casemiro will feature in the midweek encounter at Old Trafford.

Casemiro is suspended for the game following his red card in United’s last Champions League match: a 3-2 loss to Galatasaray. But the 31-year-old has also been struggling with an injury in recent weeks and was replaced in the latter stages of Brazil’s draw with Venezuela on 13 October due to a knock.

Casemiro then played the full 90 minutes against Uruguay five days later, before it was confirmed he would not be involved in Saturday’s trip to Sheffield United. Erik ten Hag’s side won 2-1 without the ex-Real Madrid man, who was expected to be back at Carrington early this week to begin his preparations for Sunday’s derby against Manchester City.

However, his involvement in Monday’s session was not anticipated, and Casemiro should, therefore, be fit to face United’s local rivals at Old Trafford this weekend.

As for Malacia, his return from injury is a huge boost given the ongoing crisis in defence. The Dutchman has not played any part this term due to an injury picked up ahead of the club’s pre-season tour of the US.

While Casemiro took part in a full session, Malacia worked away from the main group as he continues his recuperation and regains his fitness. It’s unlikely the ex-Feyenoord man will be available for several more weeks given the length of his injury.

Sergio Reguilon was another player involved in Monday’s session. Ten Hag confirmed in Monday’s press conference that the on-loan Spaniard could play against Copenhagen after recovering from an illness that prevented him facing Sheffield United on Saturday.

Kobbie Mainoo was also present and Ten Hag confirmed last week that he could be selected in the matchday squad this week. The teenager hasn’t played any part this season due to an ankle injury he sustained in a pre-season fixture with Real Madrid.
