Manchester United’s preparations for the 2022/23 campaign have officially begun as the first-team squad returned for pre-season training on Monday.

Only some of the team were back for the first session of the summer, with those involved in June’s international fixtures given extra time to recuperate, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.

However, several star names were snapped returning to Carrington, with 14 players confirmed via the club’s official channels.

Among them was Anthony Martial, whose future at Old Trafford is uncertain after a disappointing few years at the club, culminating in him being sent out on loan for the second half of last season.

The same can be said of Donny van de Beek, also pictured at Carrington, who will have enjoyed a reunion with former manager Erik ten Hag, with the new United boss holding meetings with staff and players throughout the day.

Ten Hag spoke to a combined group of first-team and reserve players for several minutes before his first session, along with his assistants Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag.

The players spent over two hours working on the grass, with some arriving before 9am and departing after 4pm.

Another returning loanee from 2021/22 was Brandon Williams, who spent the campaign at Carrow Road, while fellow full-back Ethan Laird was back after he played for Swansea City and Bournemouth last season, helping the latter gain promotion back to the top flight.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been heavily linked with a move away from United, but was pictured at Carrington, as was Victor Lindelof, who missed Sweden’s four international games earlier this month due to injury.

Returning players so far confirmed: David De Gea, Tom Heaton, Matej Kovar, Ethan Laird, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Brandon Williams, Alvaro Fernandez, Donny van de Beek, Alejandro Garnacho, Shola Shoretire, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial.
