Manchester United have been dealt a blow after a knee injury ruled on-loan midfielder Marcel Sabitzer out of action for the rest of the season.

The Austrian international has scored three goals and provided one assist in 18 appearances in all competitions after he moved to Old Trafford from German giants Bayern Munich on the final day of the January transfer window. The 29-year-old missed Saturday’s win against Wolverhampton Wanderers after coming off the bench in the narrow defeat at West Ham United six days earlier and that appearance at the London Stadium could be his last for the club after BBC Sport revealed his season was over and that United had made no decision Sabitzer’s long-term future.

In a statement released on the club website, the Red Devils said: "Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel's services, as we strive for a strong finish to our season in the Premier League and the FA Cup,. We appreciate his contribution to our progress so far. We would like to wish Marcel well in having a speedy recovery."

The injury has brought a disappointing end to Sabitzer’s loan spell at Old Trafford after he helped United lift the Carabao Cup, reach the FA Cup and push for a return to the Champions League. However, the Austrian international has already suggested he would be interested in a converting that temporary move into a permanent switch.

Speaking to German outlet Bild, the midfielder said: "The situation will be assessed in the summer. But I can say for myself, I have found my place here. I know the Premier League now and I can say there is nothing better, more intense and tougher. Every game is a fight, everything goes faster. This is the best league in the world. Once you've played here, you know, it's incomparable here."
