Marc Skinner’s side are looking to add the 28-year-old Spanish midfielder to their squad this summer and are believed to be close to an agreement.

Capped twice by Spain, López is available on a free transfer with her Atlético Madrid contract set to expire and it is believed United have made her a primary target.

The Red Devils have already secured qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League and want to add quality and quanity to their squad as they approach their first season amongst Europe’s elite.

López has spent her entire career in Spain, playing for the likes of Real Sociedad, while she also played alongside Manchester United’s Ona Batlle as recently as 2020 when the pair were part of a talented Levante squad and it now appears the duo could be set to link up again.

United boss Skinner spoke in the aftermath of the FA Cup final defeat last weekend about adding to his squad in order to close the gap on his rivals, saying: “We are growing and we are investing, but the experience that Chelsea have, the investment they’ve put in over years and years and years is a factor as to why they win

“I feel that we are bridging gaps even as we don’t spend their type of budget, but I think we’re bridging gaps and I think we can show a sustainable way of doing it, but we need to keep getting the best players, and we need to keep being in the pool for the best players” he added.

It is also believed the club are interest in PSV Eindhoven teen Esmee Brugts, who would also be available on a free transfer from the Dutch side.
