David de Gea’s time as a Manchester United player could come to an end next week if a new contract can’t be arranged.

The goalkeeper, who has spent 12 years at Old Trafford, was not included on the club’s retained list which was announced last week, although the club did confirm ‘discussions remain open over a potential new contract’. De Gea’s current deal is set to expire on 30 June - next Friday - and the Spaniard could walk away for free.

Recent reports have suggested there was a feeling around the club earlier this month that De Gea would extend his current deal, yet that sense of certainty has waned, with replacements already being drawn up for the 32-year-old.

The Manchester Evening News report that some figures at the club want to ‘move on’ from De Gea, and the players are currently ‘unsure’ whether he’ll stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer.

Meanwhile, the Sun claim that failing to renew De Gea’s £375,000-a-week contract would free up significant funds to be spent on a replacement, with United’s no.1 on a salary that equates to £19.5m per annum. Jordan Pickford is said to be the primary target, while Anderlecht’s Bart Verbruggen, and Yann Sommer of Bayern Munich are also on the club’s radar.

The news surrounding De Gea comes after a largely positive season for the keeper. He claimed the Premier League Golden Glove award having kept 17 clean sheets in the top flight, three more than any other stopper. However, high-profile mistakes against Sevilla, West Ham United and in the FA Cup final proved costly for De Gea.

There’s also been a long-running issue surrounding De Gea’s ability with the ball at his feet, and the ex-Atletico Madrid man lags behind modern goalkeepers such as Alisson and Ederson who are comfortable playing out from the back.
