Manchester United are reportedly at the front of the race to land one of the players that helped Bayer Leverkusen to their historic Bundesliga title win.

A stunning hat-trick from inspirational attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz and a goal apiece from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka helped Xabi Alonso’s side to a 5-0 demolition of Werder Bremen and confirmed Bayer would become German champions for the first time in their history. The former Liverpool midfielder has put together a side full of players that are now attracting attention from elsewhere - but Alonso ignored speculation linking them with moves away from the BayArena and focused on what he called ‘the most difficult title’.

Speaking after his side’s historic title win, Alonso praised his squad, telling ESPN: "It feels great because I have this feeling that this is not just for us, this is for so many people that have been chasing this dream for so many years. I have in mind the old coaches, Christoph Daum, Klaus Augenthaler, and Roger Schmidt. They were here and they are a part of it as well and for me, it's so great to bring success and to be part of this success with this team.

"It is always special when it's the time of everything and when it's the first time of a Bundesliga title, that is the most difficult title probably. And I'm so happy to enjoy it with the players, with the fans, with the club and so many people that deserved to really, really enjoy that moment.”

Despite their title win, there are several Bayer players on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in European football as the likes of Edmond Tapsoba, Piero Hincapie and Sunday’s hat-trick hero Florian Wirtz are all believed to have suitors elsewhere. But it is former Celtic star Jeremie Frimpong that is believed to be the subject of interest from the Red Devils as they aim to boost their options on the right-hand side.

The two-times capped Dutch international has scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 38 appearances in all competitions during a historic season for his side - and that has reportedly captured the attention of the Old Trafford hierarchy. Spanish outlet Fichajes have suggested Erik ten Hag views his fellow countrymen as an upgrade on current right-back options Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and could look to trigger a £34m release clause that was placed into the contract extension he signed in October last year.
