Manchester United winger Amad trained on the grass on Monday as the 21-year-old continues his recovery from a long-term injury

Amad has missed the entire 2023/24 campaign so far due to a knee injury he sustained in pre-season, which the club confirmed in August would keep him out of the ‘first part’ of the season. Nearly three months on, and the player has finally began running outside again.

United said via their website that Amad had been ‘running out on the grass at our base on Monday morning, the first time he has been out there since the season got under way’. They also added that the attacker won't be ‘rushed into action’, and posted a video of the ex-Atalanta man running on the Carrington pitches.

Last week, Amad posted a clip on social media of him jugging a football, along with the caption ‘happy to touch the ball again’, and while he’s still several weeks off returning to action, his continued recuperation will be a big boost to Erik ten Hag. The United boss only has two natural options on the right flank, in Antony and Facundo Pellistri, and Bruno Fernandes operated in that role during Sunday’s 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Manchester City.

Amad isn’t the only player suffering from a long-term injury who has made positive steps in the last week. Tyrell Malacia picked up a knee problem over the summer, but was spotted going through a solo training session at Carrington last week.

Kobbie Mainoo also hasn’t featured since pre-season, but made his playing return with the Under-19 team last Tuesday, and was named on the bench during Sunday’s loss to City. The teenager could be handed his first senior minutes of the season in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United.

Ten Hag also confirmed on Friday that Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has missed the last nine matches with a hamstring injury, is back in full training.
