Julen Lopetegui explains key change West Ham made to beat Manchester United
West Ham scored late on to defeat Man Utd in the Premier League and pile more misery on Erik ten Hag.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui says his side managed to beat Manchester United by being 'more aggressive' on the ball in the second-half of their Premier League win.
United were made to rue a number of missed opportunities as well as a controversial penalty decision as goals from Crysencio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen came either side of a Casemiro header.
While the manner of West Ham's winner was certainly a key turning point in the match, the real difference was that United failed to take the chances that fell their way, while the home side took the few that fell their way. Another key impact came when West Ham proactively made a triple half-time substitution to swing momentum in their favour, with United more reactionary in their changes.
Speaking after the win, Lopetegui explained the changes and how he masterminded West Ham's unexpected win. “Obviously, there were some good moments from our goalkeeper, from the defenders and some luck, but 0-0 at half-time, it was a good way to move on.
“I was thinking that maybe we could change a few different things. We needed to win more individual fights. We needed to be more aggressive with our ball. We needed to be more dangerous in [attack]. So, that’s why we were thinking about Crysencio in the second half and we put on Tomáš [Souček] and JC [Todibo] too.
“They did well, but it’s about all the team, so we are happy for them. The mental approach of the players, taking the ball, taking the game to United.”
