Premier League release official statement as West Ham awarded controversial penalty vs Manchester United
Man Utd lost in controversial circumstance against West Ham United in the Premier League.
Manchester United fell to a controversial defeat against West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Casemiro looked to have rescued a point when he cancelled out Crysencio Summerville’s opener in the final minutes of the match, only for West Ham to score an even later goal through a controversial penalty decision.
Jarrod Bowen scored the winner from the penalty spot in added-time after referee David Coote awarded West Ham a penalty when defender Matthijs de Ligt was adjudged to have fouled Danny Ings in the area.
The referee initially waved play on before he was recommended to review the incident on a pitch side monitor, eventually awarding the decision in favour of the home side, despite the fact Ings also appeared to handle the ball in the collision.
Taking to social media during the match, the Premier League released an official statement on the controversial decision and why Coote had overturned the initial call.
“The referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for a challenge by de Ligt on Ings,” the statement read. “The VAR deemed there was sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty.”
