I advised Patrick Dorgu to turn down 'a lot of money' at Liverpool FC - now he could join Manchester United
Man Utd are in talks to sign Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window.
Manchester United could have a new wing-back before the end of the month. To make it even better, he previously turned down a move to Liverpool.
United are in talks to sign Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window, though there is still plenty of work to be done before an agreement can be reached. Ruben Amorim has prioritised the addition of a new wing-back this month and is prepared to let both Antony and Tyrell Malacia leave on loan to facilitate it.
Dorgu has been a key part of the Lecce squad this season and they will command a high price for the 20-year-old if they are to allow him to leave amid their ongoing relegation battle. It has been suggested Lecce would command at least €40million, though they could accept a lower bid with performance-related add-ons included.
They might have to act quickly. Liverpool is another team who have been credited with an interest in Dorgu this month and his agent previously claimed he even turned down a move to Anfield two years ago to prioritise playing time at a key stage in his career.
“Liverpool want him. Liverpool have been watching him and interested in him for some time, but if he goes there he’ll have to play in the U23 team,” Kingsley Ogbodo told Bold in June 2023. “It’s not the best for him, so I advise him not to do it. They can offer him a lot of money, but that’s not what we’re looking for right now. We focus on his career, development and playing time.
“Liverpool are of course not the only club that want him. There are many clubs here in England who are keeping an eye on him. Manchester City kept an eye on him when he played against England for the U19 national team in Hobro in Denmark.
“Lecce’s scout has also told me that Barcelona is also keeping an eye on Patrick, because he’s a huge talent. We’d like him to stay in Lecce a little longer. Two more seasons so he can mature and gain experience. So when he moves on to a bigger club in a few seasons, we will know at that time that he is ready for it.”
