The latest transfer talk from Manchester United as the Red Devils prepare for a hectic summer transfer window.

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee after seeing off competition from AC Milan and Arsenal.

The Red Devils are yet to get their summer spending underway but will face major decisions on Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood and Donny van de Beek as they return from respective loan spells with Borussia Dortmund, Getafe and Eintracht Frankfurt. Erik ten Hag is believed to be keen to strengthen several positions within his squad and a centre-back and a midfielder are said to be high on the agenda as the United head coach looks to claim silverware for the third successive season.

After Rasmus Hojlund struggled to make a consistent impact at the top end of the pitch following a big money move from Atalanta last season, United are keen to boost competition in forward positions and their interest in Netherlands international Zirkzee has been widely reported in recent weeks. The former Bayern Munich forward is said to be against a move to Arsenal and former United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic revealed Milan are looking elsewhere for a striker after all but conceding defeat in their own attempts to land Zirkzee.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed United have an agreement over personal terms with the 23-year-old forward and talks with Bologna over the makeup of the deal are now reaching a successful conclusion. Although the striker is believed to have a £35m release clause, United will now have to make a decision over whether to pay the entire fee in one go or pay extra to Bologna via a number of instalments over the years to come.

Speaking on his Transfer Update channel, the Italian journalist said: “Joshua Zirkzee to Manchester United, the 'Here we go' is really imminent. The agreement between Man United and Zirkzee is done; it’s an agreement on the contract, on the salary, on the commission. So everything is agreed and done. What’s needed now is to decide whether Manchester United will go and pay the release clause, €40 million, in one solution.

“So on the financial point of view for Man United, it is better to negotiate with Bologna, or if they can negotiate and strike a new deal with Bologna, with a new structure of the deal, because that’s also a possibility, maybe to pay something like €42-43 million, but in three, four, five years, instead of paying everything in one solution immediately. There are two ways: trigger the clause or negotiate with Bologna. The two clubs are in contact. But in any case, Manchester United will proceed with the Joshua Zirkzee deal. Joshua Zirkzee can’t wait to be a new Manchester United player, I can guarantee that.”

United are also believed to be keen to add a centre-back to their squad after the departure of veteran defender Raphael Varane. There have been reports new bids has been submitted for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite and Lille’s Leny Yoro and talks are ongoing with Bayern Munich over a possible deal for Matthijs de Ligt.
