Gary Neville has been speaking about Dan Ashworth’s appointment as Manchester United sporting director.

Gary Neville has been speaking about Dan Ashworth’s likely impact at Manchester United after his move from Newcastle United. Ashworth has finally begun work at Old Trafford after months of bickering between United and the Magpies, with the two clubs struggling to agree a fee, while Ashworth was sidelined from his job during the whole negotiations process.

But all that is behind him now, and he will be hard at work behind the scenes as United look to balance the arrival of new players with Profit and Sustainability rules, something many of the Premier League clubs have struggled with over recent times. The Red Devils have recruited poorly over recent years, but Jim Ratcliffe has demanded a change in transfer philosophy that Ashworth will oversee.

The Red Devils are expected to regularly sign young players and other talents that will give them a return on their investment rather than overpaying for the shiny new object, so to speak. As United begin making inroads into summer additions, club legend turned pundit Gary Neville has been speaking about Ashworth’s potential impact.

"What I am hopeful of is that all of the appointments that have been made in and around Erik ten Hag...obviously a new CEO, Dan Ashworth, who I think does bring composure,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “I think he also deserves a mention in respect of the performances of this England team over the last few years.

"He was one of the key people in building the foundations of this new England look. You won't get another situation, I don't think, with Dan Ashworth there and the other people whereby United are panicking in the transfer window and shooting from the hip like they have done in years gone by. I think it will be quite measured. I think if they can't get who they want, they won't buy anyone. I think they will make sure they're quite focused and precise in what they do moving forward. That should give Erik ten Hag more stability and better advice around him and more experience which hopefully will help him."

Ashworth is yet to address the drama of his arrival at United, but he has spoken a little about Ten Hag after the club agreed a new contract with the Dutch boss. United’s new sporting chief said: “With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football.

“While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes. This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently. With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”
