Everton have made a late attempt to 'hijack' Sevilla's loan move for Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, according to reports.

Hannibal looks set to leave United on a temporary basis this month, following the decision to activate a 12-month extension on his contract earlier this week. He was one of three Reds to have deals extended, alongside defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof.

There has been plenty of interest in Hannibal's services for the next six months and Fabrizio Romano reported that the Tunisian was set to join Sevilla, having picked the Spanish side over Marseille and Freiburg.

But shortly after, the transfer expert reported that Everton were making a late move to try and hijack the deal. He added that contact had been ongoing between both clubs and the player throughout the day.

Everton are in need of midfield reinforcements with Abdoulaye Doucoure missing the last five matches with a hamstring injury. Sean Dyche's side have been short of cover in the advanced midfield role and suffered another blow on Thursday as Dwight McNeil was stretchered off in the 0-0 FA Cup draw at Crystal Palace.

Having been hit with a 10-point deduction for breaching financial fair play regulations, Everton have had to be savvy during transfer windows over recent years. They are planning to be active in the loan market this month and Hannibal offers them a chance to land Premier League experience at a low cost.

Hannibal's likely exit from United comes amid a potential wider clearout of fringe players, whether that be temporarily or on a permanent basis. Elimination from the Champions League and Carabao Cup has seen the fixture schedule ease, lessening the need to a deep squad.

The midfielder impressed with a run of appearances at United towards the end of last year, scoring his first senior goal for the Reds in a 3-1 defeat against Brighton in September. Erik ten Hag praised Hannibal's energy and commitment but minutes have dwindled and he has not started since November 1.
