Erik ten Hag sends warning message to Antony after Manchester United goalscoring return

Man Utd started Antony in their 7-0 Carabao Cup win over League One side Barnsley in midweek.

Erik ten Hag praised Antony for the manner of his performance in Manchester United’s midweek thrashing of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup but warned that he needs to keep working hard if he is to get further opportunities.

United recorded their largest winning margin of Ten Hag's reign thanks to a penalty from Antony and braces by Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen against the League One side.

Antony performed well on his first start of the season but will have to put in more good performances if he is to force his way into the starting line up amid a fierce competition for places in attack.

The Brazilian is still effectively United's third-choice on the right wing behind both Garnacho and Amad Diallo, and is likely to be on the bench when they travel to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the match, Ten Hag praised Antony for showing the right attitude but warned he will need to be consistent if he is to keep his place in the side.

"I think every player should give those reactions, you have to train hard, you have to perform in training, you have to earn a right to play and when the moment is your chance you have to take it but the manager can only pick 11 players and make five subs," he told reporters.

"So make sure you have those players in every game and by a consistent basis perform and most important when the chance is there you have to perform in a game and contribute to a winning team."
