Erik ten Hag has warned Manchester United against ‘burning money’ in the transfer market as their pursuit for a striker continues.

The Dutchman has already admitted on a few occasions that he would like to bring in a new forward in the January window following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, but revealed last week that ‘financial criteria’ may impact the club’s recruitment policy over the next month. Anthony Martial is the Red Devils’ only recognised centre-forward, although Marcus Rashford can operate through the middle if required. Given United are still in three cup competitions and Martial’s worrying injury record this campaign, the club’s ability to sign a striker could be pivotal to their chances of succeeding in the second half of the season.

However, speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth, Ten Hag said the club will not panic buy in January and need to avoid wasting their limited financial resources.

“I think we have a good team with the players, when all are available,” the United manager opined. “But [with] many games coming up there is a need for one who can have an impact. Otherwise you are just burning money and it doesn’t strengthen the squad, and it doesn’t help you.”

One option for the Red Devils could be to recall Amad on loan from Sunderland. The 20-year-old has impressed in the North-East and has scored six in his last 11 matches for the Black Cats, prompting speculation he could return to United in January.

Asked whether he would consider bringing Amad back, Ten Hag responded: “I would consider everything as long as it strengthens the squad.

“But at the same time, we have to think [about] it. I have a little reservation for that because I don’t want to stop the process there. He is in a really good progress there. So I am happy with that.

“But I know they need experiences, young players. When he is with us, when we decide he comes back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or, at a minimum, to come into a lot of games and have an impact.”

Ten Hag was also quizzed on whether any players will be allowed to leave in January, especially Anthony Elanga, who has been linked with a loan move to Everton. However, the former Ajax boss seemed to imply he’s unlikely to let attacking players depart this month.

“I know we have good players and I know a lot of clubs will have an interest in players who are not so often playing for us, but we need the squad. We need depth in the squad, especially in the front line.”
