Manchester United prospect Charlie Wellens will return from his loan spell at Oldham Athletic. The Red Devils have a decision to make on what to do with him ahead of the second-half of the season.

The youngster, who can play in midfield or defence, made six appearances in all competitions, four of which came in the National League, and chipped in with a single goal. Oldham have announced on their official club website that he will be heading back ‘within the next week’.

He was given the green light to leave United on loan for the first time in his career in early September to get some experience under his belt. However, although he managed to play some games, the Latics have been struggling near the bottom of the table under former Everton defender David Unsworth and risk slipping into the sixth tier unless they can turn their fortunes around.

Wellens, 20, is the son of current Leyton Orient boss, Richie. He has been on the books at Old Trafford for his whole career to date and has risen up through the academy ranks of the Premier League giants as he awaits his senior debut.

His contract expires at the end of this campaign and he is due to become a free agent this summer as things stand. However, there are still plenty of months to go before then and he will be looking to show what he can do, wherever he may be playing his football in the meantime.
