Rio Ferdinand has said Harry Maguire’s time at Manchester United ‘hasn’t worked out’ and claimed he would understand if the former Leicester City defender sought a move from Old Trafford.

Maguire was named on the substitutes’ bench for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Marcus Rashford netting the winner after he was introduced at the break. Maguire also came on in the win at Molineux, although he was thrown on during injury-time.

The decision to bench the United captain - along with Victor Lindelof - is even more controversial given Erik ten Hag started Luke Shaw at centre-back in place of Maguire. Explaining that decision after the game, the United manager said: “You get better angles in possession, but in this game it was also important - they have speed on the right wing and Luke Shaw can defend that."

But Ferdinand felt starting the left-back at the heart of defence is a clear indication that Maguire isn’t in Ten Hag’s first-team plans, and the 44-year-old said it could be time for United’s no.5 to move on.

“This is not long-term,” opined Ferdinand, when speaking pre-match on BT Sport.”It did raise my eyebrows when I saw Lindelof and Maguire on the bench.

“If they weren’t fit they wouldn’t be on the bench. If they weren’t able to play some part of the game they wouldn’t be on the bench. It shows what he [Ten Hag] thinks of those two guys when he is playing Luke Shaw at centre-half.

“If I’m Harry Maguire, I am looking for a new club right now, I have to be honest. You saw what he does for England, he is impeccable for England, he is faultless for England. He puts in good, solid performances for England.

“At Manchester United, it just hasn’t worked out for him. This manager, it is showing in his team selection that he is not going to be one of the top two, three centre-halves in his squad.

“So I am thinking if I were him in his shoes, I would be saying, ‘find me somewhere else where I can go and enjoy my football and be playing regularly’.”
