Erik ten Hag favourite shoots down Manchester United summer transfer reunion

Matthijs de Ligt played under Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax and has been linked with a summer move

Matthijs de Ligt has shot down the suggestion he is unhappy at Bayern Munich and that he is looking to leave the club in the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old struggled for playing time at the start of the season following the arrival of Kim Min-jae from Napoli and saw his opportunities further hampered when he suffered a knee injury as well.

De Ligt started just twice in the Bundesliga before the winter break, which led to reports linking him with a move away from the club, and in particular a reunion with his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

United are themselves on the look out for at least one centre-back in the summer transfer window, but Dutch international De Ligt has played down the suggestion that he could find himself at Old Trafford. Asked about the rumours, he told Voetbal International: "I think that mainly has to do with the expectations from outside.

"When I don’t play, then a link is immediately made saying that I would not be happy and would want to leave. Of course there have also been matches that I would have liked to play, but I really have no reason to complain. "I’m still having a great time at Bayern Munich and have been playing again lately. I never let rumours get to my head or drive me crazy because I know what the reality is."

De Ligt admits he found the lack of playing time at the start of the season 'annoying' but he relishes the fierce competition for places at a club like Bayern. He added: "I’ve started 10 of the past 12 matches. And I feel like I’m getting fitter and better, which is a very good feeling.

"I started the season with an injury and that is of course always very annoying. I needed time to come back and then I also suffered a knee injury. As a result, I missed a lot of matches and at a club like Bayern Munich you have to deal with a lot of competition with international players."
