Cody Gakpo to Man Utd transfer: Price tag, winger’s admission, World Cup form

Manchester United continue to be linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo.

The Red Devils were big spenders in the summer transfer window as Erik ten Hag put his stamp on his new squad, but he is unlikely to be finished there. United are currently looking up at the top four position, and while there has been some improvement, further resources are likely to be required.

Gakpo comments

After revealing there were options to join Leeds United or Southampton during the summer window, Gakpo said: “I was close to leaving PSV. I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United, in the end the deal didn’t go through... and it was a shame.”

Since then, he has added: “I’m focused now on the World Cup. It’s always nice to hear [transfer rumours] but I just focus here and do my best. I don’t get shy about the rumours. But it’s a team sport, it’s not about one person.

“I prefer it to be about the team. It’s nice things that people write, but I’m not too concerned with that. Right now I’m busy with the Dutch team. I’ll see what happens in the winter. In football, anything is possible.”

Performances this season

Gakpo’s value has continued to rise this season amid impressive performances for club and country. Gakpo has scored 13 times for PSV this term, assisting 17 times, that includes three goals and two assists in the Europa League.

Gakpo was marked as one to watch coming into the World Cup this winter, and he has already managed two goals in two games for the Netherlands, catching the eye.

That could heighten interest from United, while also sparking further interest from others who may be watching on ahead of the January transfer window.

There have been reports aplenty surrounding Gakpo’s future, and one of the latest, from Football Insider claims United have already agreed terms with the winger ahead of a possible January deal. That would be no surprise given the willingness Gakpo has shown towards United, but agreeing terms with a player is a long way from agreeing a deal with his club.

Elsewhere, Foot Mercato have reported United have made Gako a ‘priority’ for the winter window as they look to improve their attack. It’s claimed the 23-year-old would likely cost £52million during the January window, with PSV well aware of their star winger’s talent and growing value.
