But when holding a United shirt on the pitch ahead of the victory over Liverpool, Casemiro’s name appeared on the back without a number.
On Friday, United revealed he will wear the No.18 this season via their official website.
It’s a jersey which carries a lot of history at Old Trafford, and was worn by legendary midfielder Paul Scholes for the majority of his time at the club.

It was last held by Bruno Fernandes, who switched to No.8 at the beginning of the summer following Juan Mata’s departure. Ashley Young also wore 18 in between Scholes and Fernandes.

Casemiro previously occupied the No.14 at Real, and that shirt was free at United just a few weeks ago following the departure of Jesse Lingard, but Christian Eriksen picked that number upon signing for the club.

Casemiro and Eriksen are two of United’s four summer signings so far this window, along with Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez, although a fifth could be on the way soon after the Red Devils submitted a new bid for Antony earlier this week.
Meanwhile, Casemiro was pictured training with his new team-mates on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s game against Southampton, where the Brazilian could make his United debut.
However, Erik ten Hag may opt to stick with the midfield of Scott McTominay, Eriksen and Fernandes, who impressed in Monday’s win against Liverpool.
