One of Erik ten Hag’s first jobs as the new Manchester United is to assess which current players he wants to keep and who should move on.
That’s no small task, with the club website listing 40 players in their current first-team squad. While some of those are fringe and youth-team players, it still emphasises how big United’s pool of players is.
Given how disappointing this campaign has been for the Red Devils, there are expected to be plenty of outgoings at Old Trafford, in addition to those who Ten Hag will want to bring into the club.
But who will leave and who will remain at United for the 2022/23 campaign? We’ve cast our eyes over 35 of the squad’s most established players and assessed how likely they are to depart this summer.

21. Fred - Very unlikely
Has turned his United career around and has been one of the team’s best players in recent weeks. Fred’s energy could be key for Ten Hag’s style.

22. Bruno Fernandes - Very unlikely
Was handed a long-term contract recently and, despite enduring an indifferent campaign, is still United’s best player.

23. Facundo Pellistri - Likely
Not expected to be ready to hold down a first-team spot. Another loan looks likely for the winger.

24. Nemanja Matic - Very likely
Has confirmed he’s leaving in the summer and the ex-Chelsea man looks too slow for the pace of Premier League football.
