One of Erik ten Hag’s first jobs as the new Manchester United is to assess which current players he wants to keep and who should move on.
That’s no small task, with the club website listing 40 players in their current first-team squad. While some of those are fringe and youth-team players, it still emphasises how big United’s pool of players is.
Given how disappointing this campaign has been for the Red Devils, there are expected to be plenty of outgoings at Old Trafford, in addition to those who Ten Hag will want to bring into the club.
But who will leave and who will remain at United for the 2022/23 campaign? We’ve cast our eyes over 35 of the squad’s most established players and assessed how likely they are to depart this summer.

25. Donny van de Beek - Unlikely
Has a good relationship with Ten Hag from their time at Ajax and is expected to be given another chance at Old Trafford.

26. James Garner - Possible
Certainly won’t be sold, but could be sent on loan to gain Premier League experience. It’s all down to whether Ten Hag thinks he’s ready to play first-team football for United.

27. Scott McTominay - Very unlikely
Young, hungry and athletic, the Scotland international is one player Ten Hag will probably enjoy working with.

28. Hannibal - Possible
Like a few of United’s other young talents, it’s about whether he’s ready to operate in the senior squad. If not, a loan move looks likely.
