Manchester City have allowed another young talent to leave the club this summer, with Romeo Lavia completing a transfer to Southampton.

The Belgian was confirmed as a Southampton player on Wednesday night, and follows the likes of Gavin Bazunu, CJ Egan-Riley and Darko Gyabi who have been permitted to depart the club this summer.

In many ways, it’s a shrewd bit of business from the Premier League champions, who could allow Lavia to develop away from the Etihad and potentially bring him back for a fairly modest fee in a few years.

But what are the terms of the transfer and why is it such an advantageous deal for City?

How much did Southampton pay for Lavia?

The deal to bring the teenager to St Mary’s cost the south coast club an initial fee of £10.5m, but that could rise to £14m.

The transfer also includes a 20% sell-on clause for City, and the Blues have the right to match any bid that is accepted from another club.

It essentially means City are almost guaranteeing themselves the option of bringing the midfielder back to the club in the coming years, while earning at least £10.5m for a player who has not made a single Premier League appearance.

What did Lavia say?

Posting on social media after the transfer was announced, Lavia wrote: “My Manchester City journey has come to an end.

“I’d like to thank everyone associated with this great club for all you’ve done for me during these 2 years at the club.

“I’ve developed into an even better player, person and it was also an honour to make my debut for this massive club. I wish the club nothing but the best for the future.”

Upon signing for Southampton, Lavia told their official website: “I’m really delighted to join this club. I think this club has a really good culture with young players, so I’m really happy to be here.

“When I heard of the interest of Southampton I was buzzing because there’s an opportunity for young players to develop as much as possible and I’m very excited.”

The Saints beat Leeds United to Lavia’s signature, with The Athletic claiming the Yorkshire club were interested in bringing him to Elland Road.
