Rodolfo Borrell gives latest update on Manchester City’s Covid outbreak

Manchester City assistant manager Rodolfo Borrell has given an update on the club’s current Covid-19 status, with several players returning positive tests recently.

The Spaniard, who was in charge of the Sky Blues’ 4-1 FA Cup third round win over Swindon Town on Friday, took the reins following Pep Guardiola testing positive for the virus.

He has now given an update regarding how the club is trying to ‘minimise’ the risk of the infection, with the Omicron variant spreading rapidly around the globe.

Speaking ahead of the game, Borrell said: “The Club is 100% the same as it was from the beginning of the pandemic.

“We have gone back to the training protocols that were in place at the beginning of the pandemic - there is a lot of guidance and advice in terms of the players trying to minimise risky situations.

“But obviously the virus is everywhere - especially for the people who have children. At the end of the day they go to school and have activities and you can get it from anywhere.

“In terms of the club, the club is doing great in terms of protocols and guidance and updating the situation.

“But we are trying to minimize risk situations.”

The 50-year-old, who has been Guardiola’s number two since the latter’s arrival at the Etihad, also mentioned how two further members of staff returned positive tests after 14 staff and seven first-team players were isolating due to covid.

City’s next match is at home against Chelsea on Saturday and if those affected provide negative lateral flow tests on day six and day seven, they can cut short their isolation period and be in contention for the game.
