Pep Guardiola was giving little away about whether Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne will be fit in time for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool, when he conducted his pre-match press conference.

The pair were both replaced in Manchester City’s Champions League fixture with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, and were expected to miss out on the clash with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

But Guardiola was coy when asked whether they’ll be fit in time for the trip to Wembley, although he did admit neither have trained since Wednesday’s draw in Madrid, a result that saw City progress to the last four of the Champions League.

“They [Walker and De Bruyne] didn't train today,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday from Millwall’s training base, which City have been using since returning to England.

“We will see tomorrow. Apparently, it will be so close after what happened on Wednesday, but we will see.”

Asked to expand on Walker, the City boss said: “He had a big twist but it is getting better. We will see in the next hours, next days, for the next games. In football games, these kinds of things happen. It happened many times this season but we will adjust and go again.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola confirmed De Bruyne’s injury is not muscular and that he suffered a cut to his calf at the Wanda Metropolitano which required stitches.

“Ruben Dias trained today and we will see about him,” the Catalan added. Dias hasn’t played since an FA Cup win over Peterborough United on 1 March, and has since been missing with a hamstring injury.

However, the Portuguese defender was named among the substitutes on Wednesday, and could be an option for Guardiola among the mounting absentees.

Who will start in nets for City?

The Sky Blues have often started with goalkeeper Zack Steffen in the FA Cup over recent seasons, and the American played in the quarter-final win over Southampton last month.

Steffen also featured in last season’s semi-final loss to Chelsea, and Guardiola was asked whether he’ll start the 27-year-old on Saturday after missing a large chunk of February and March through injury.

“I am going to think about it. I still have to speak tonight with the doctors and physios about the condition of many players,” Guardiola explained.

“Tonight, tomorrow morning I will decide but, of course, in the FA Cup I normally play Zack and that is an option tomorrow.”
