Manchester City’s treble-winning parade on Monday marked a very definitive end to the 2022/23 campaign, one the club’s supporters will never forget.
There was a slight dip in performance over the middle part of the campaign, as Pep Guardiola subtly reconfigured his tactical system to allow John Stones to step into midfield and the team to create more chances for Erling Haaland, but for the majority of the season City were outstanding.
The Blues started superbly, winning four of the first five league matches and netting 19 in the process. Guardiola’s men also enjoyed a four-match run across October and November where the team scored 18 goals.
When the team’s form picked up again from February onwards, City went on a 13-game winning streak in the league as they easily swept Arsenal aside on their march to the title, and also put together an unbeaten run in all competitions that spanned 28 games in total.
There was an FA Cup campaign to enjoy as well, where Bruno Fernandes’ penalty at Wembley was the only goal conceded, while City also beat the elite of European football as they secured a first Champions League crown.
Throughout the season, there were some exemplary performances from City, particularly at home, with the Blues winning all 16 matches at the Etihad in 2023. With this in mind, we’ve picked out the best 10 displays from the treble-winners in 2022/23…
1. Man City 6-0 Nottingham Forest (31 August)- 10th
A first-half hat-trick for City’s star striker, and his second in four days, was an early sign of what was to come from Haaland. Joao Cancelo and Julian Alvarez (2) also got in on the act after the break, to the despair of a dishevelled Forest.
2. Sevilla 0-4 Man City (6 September)- 9th
A week later and this was total domination from Guardiola’s men against the side who went on to win the Europa League. City allowed the Spanish side just one shot on target, with Haaland scoring a brace, while Phil Foden and Ruben Dias netted in the Champions League opener.
3. Man City 6-3 Man Utd (2 October)- 8th
A scoreline that flattered Manchester United and didn’t reflect City’s dominance. The visitors scored two in the last five minutes after Haaland and Foden had both netted hat-trick on what was a derby day to remember in East Manchester.
4. Man City 4-0 Chelsea (8 January)- 7th
An understrength City tore Graham Potter’s side apart - and they managed just three shots all afternoon in the FA Cup third-round tie.
