Storm Isha: Met Office hour-by-hour weather forecast for Manchester with yellow weather warnings in place

The unsettled start to 2024 looks set to continue for Manchester on Sunday. This comes as Storm Isha, the first named storm of the year, has been confirmed to hit. 

The storm was named by the Met Office, and wind gusts of up to 80mph are expected in some places. Many areas of the country are expected to be hit with gusts of at least 50mph. Having been under a yellow weather warning, Greater Manchester has now been upgraded to amber for the 12 hours covering 6pm on Sunday, January 21 and 6am on Monday, January 22.

Storm Isha hit the UK on Sunday, and the strong gusts forecast for Manchester suggest the storm won’t be missing the region. By around 2pm on Sunday afternoon gusts of over 40mph hit some parts of Greater Manchester. 

This will continue through the week, with strong winds of over 40mph expected until as late as Wednesday (January 24). A second yellow warning for wind will be in place for the region until noon on Wednesday.

Met Office forecaster Ellie Glaisyer said: “The main thing about this storm is it is very widespread across the whole of the UK. Quite often we see storms affecting the north west or the southern half of the UK, whereas this one, later on Sunday and into Monday, the whole of the UK is covered by a warning, which is relatively rare.

“In that nature it’s a very widespread storm and it’s going to be affecting everybody. Heavy rain will affect everybody, those strong winds will affect everybody. That’s the main difference to previous storms we have seen.”
