The Sunday Times Rich list 2022 is out, and featured amongst the wealthiest people from the North west of England is one group from the Manchester area.

Here’s a summary of who, according to the list, are the wealthiest people in Manchester, and everything you need to know about what the list means and how its compiled.

What is the Sunday Times Rich List?

According to those behind the list, the Sunday Times Rich List is “the definitive guide to wealth in the United Kingdom. It charts the wealth of the 250 richest people in the UK.

“The list is based on identifiable wealth, including land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies. It excludes bank accounts, to which the paper has no access.

“The Magazine includes several interviews and features, focused on some of the leading players and personalities among the richest 250, as well as a full ranking by order of wealth.

“The Young Rich List details the 100 individuals with the biggest fortunes aged 30 or under, and the Magazine also includes the top 40 music millionaires.”

When was the 2022 list released?

The Sunday Times Rich List 2022 was released this morning, 20 May.

It was published online today and will appear in print in The Sunday Times on Sunday, 22 May.

This will be published in a 68-page special edition of The Sunday Times Magazine which will reveal the wealth of the 250 richest people in Britain in its 34th annual edition.

How is the list compiled?

The Rich List is based on The Sunday Times’ estimates of the minimum wealth of Britain’s 250 richest people or families, the 100 richest aged 30 or under, and the 40 wealthiest musicians. The actual size of each person’s fortune may be much larger than the estimate.

How many billionaires are there in the UK?

According to the 2022 list, there are a record 177 billionaires in the UK. this is up six on last year.

The combined wealth of the UK billionaires is £653.122 billion, up £55.853 billion - 9.4 per cent, on the total wealth of the billionaires in last year’s Rich List.

Who is the richest person/people in Manchester?

Within the list of the top 10 richest in the North West are Salford brothers Peter and Fred Done.

The brothers are joint owners of Warrington-based betting business Betfred, which has an estimated 1600 branches across the UK, and Manchester-based human resources outfit Peninsula.

Peter and Fred started Peninsula in 1983 to offer 24/7 employment law, HR and health & safety support to small & fast-growing businesses.

According to the company website, Peninsula was launched as “the first consultancy to make HR and health & safety services accessible to businesses of all sizes.

“From writing staff contracts and health and safety policies to tribunal representation, Peninsula offered complete support to take the stress out of running a business—without the expense of a local solicitor.”

The brothers have a combined wealth of £1,476 billion which is an increase of £241 million on last year.

Has anyone in Manchester lost their billionaire status?

According to the 2022 list, two people in Manchester have lost their billionaire status since 2021.

Matt Moulding, 50, founder of the Manchester-based online retailer THG, and his wife Jodie have seen their fortune plummet to £700 million from £2.1 billion a year ago.

The other Manchester-based resident to lose billionaire status is 57 year-old Mahmud Kamani.

Kamani controls the internet fashion retailer Boohoo, and has seen his family wealth cut by almost half to £720 million from £1.42 billion in 2021.
