Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List Manchester: Rio Ferdinand, Antony Cotton & community champions rewarded

A string of people with connections to Greater Manchester have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to society in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List 2022 - and some very famous faces are among them.

Well-known Greater Manchester figures from the worlds of sport, TV, entertainment and culture are among those from the city-region to receive the prestigious accolades as the Queen celebrates 70 years on the throne.

The honours’ list this year particularly rewards people who have shown sustained public service as well as those working in the environment and sustainability and youth engagement.

Here are some of the Greater Manchester recipients of honours from the Palace.

Who has been recognised in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List?

The list of Mancunians recognised in the honours’ list includes Antony Cotton, known for his role as Sean Tully in Coronation Street.

The 46-year-old, who is from Bury, has been given an MBE for services to the British Army, personnel and veterans.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who now works as a pundit and commentator, has been given the OBE for his activism and charity work.

Other sports stars who have been recognised include Paralympic cycling gold medallists Neil and Lora Fachie, who live in Altrincham.

The married couple have both received OBEs for their services to cycling.

The OBE has also been awarded to Wigan Warriors rugby league legend and England and Great Britain international Sean O’Loughlin for his services to the 13-man code.

Dave Moutrey, the director and chief executive of Manchester culture hub HOME, has also received the OBE for his services to the arts, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

There is also an OBE for Professor Samia Nefti-Meziani from Altrincham for services to robotics.

Professor Nefti-Meziani is a professor of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics and director of the company Asar UK Ltd which specialises in automation.

Clare Roberts. who works as the CEO of Kids Planet Day Nurseries in Manchester, has also been given the OBE for services to education.

Dr Rupert Whittaker, the co-founder of the Terrence Higgins Trust, has also been given the OBE for his services to charity and public health.

Julian Hartley, the chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who is from Stockport, has also become Sir Julian after receiving a knighthood for his services to healthcare.

Who has been given an MBE in the honours’ list?

There have also been a number of MBE honours bestowed on people from the city-region. They have gone to:

Dr Rizwan Ahmed - consultant respiratory physician at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, for services to public health during Covid-19.

Catherine Connolly - headteacher at Brownhill Learning Community, for services to the education of disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people.

Rebecca Friel - CEO of Odd Arts, for services to education and the community in Manchester.

Gary Hall - performance director of GB Taekwondo, for services to the martial arts sport.

Humera Haqqani - managing director of Let’s Talk, for services to business and to the community in Rochdale.

William Heap - for voluntary service to the community in Oldham.

Janet Heap - for voluntary service to the community in Oldham.

Elizabeth Jones - the chair of governors at St Damian’s Science College in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, for services to education.

Najma Khalid - the founder, of the Women’s CHAI Project and lead organiser at Parent Power Oldham, for services to the community in Oldham.

David Molyneux - the leader of Wigan Council, for services to local government and to the community in Wigan.

Professor Raj Murali - consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. for services to international doctors working in the NHS.

Claire Osment- chair of Ongoing Women’s Local Support, for services to victims of domestic abuse in Stockport.

Elizabeth Owolabi - for voluntary and charitable services in Manchester.

Lieutenant Colonel Glyn Richard Potts DL - for services to education and to the army cadet force.

Pamela Scarry - head of development, continuous improvement service at HM Revenue and Customs, for public service.

Angela Shiel - a foster carer at Salford City Council, for services to fostering.

Angela Usher - for voluntary services to disadvantaged young people through music.

Sanjaykumar Jayantilal Vadera - CEO of The Fragrance Shop and Per-Scent, for services to international trade.

Who has been given the BEM in Greater Manchester?

People across Greater Manchester have also been given the British Empire Medal (BEM).

The BEM, according to the Government’s website, is given out for “a ‘hands-on’ service to the local community” which could be charity work, volunteering or an innovative project which makes a significant difference to people’s everyday lives.

In Greater Manchester these have been given to:

Dorothy Bowker - founder of The Bridge at Leigh, for charitable and voluntary services to disadvantaged people in Leigh.

Pamela Duxbury - counsellor and service manager at Beacon Bolton Counselling Service, for services to the community in Bolton.

Ann Lonsdale - for services to the community in Bolton.

Michelle McHale - for services to the community in Trafford and Manchester, particularly during Covid-19.

Brian Morton - for services to the community in Milnrow and Newhey, Rochdale, during Covid-19.

Victoria Snell- customer relations manager at Transpennine Express, for services to mental health and wellbeing.

Vincent Thompson - for services to the community in Greater Manchester.
