Avanti doubles Manchester to London service on West Coast mainline as rail travel begins to bounce back

Avanit’s West Coast mainline service has been increased from today (28 February) .

Avanti West Coast has brought back train services which had stopped in December and January because of staff shortages.

The rail operator, along with others, had cut some timetables due to a wave of Covid-19 causing staff to isolate late last year and early this year.

However, the frequency of services between Manchester and London will double from today as restrictions around Covid lift and more people get back on trains again - though traveller levels are still significantly below pre-pandemic levels.

More trains will then be added from mid-May.

What has Avanti said?

Phil Whittingham, MD of Avanti West Coast, said: “As Covid restrictions are eased and people are returning to rail we are pleased to announce a phased increase in service levels in line with demand.

“Avanti West Coast remains committed to supporting the ongoing recovery of our economy and the communities we serve, while enabling our customers to travel with confidence.

“We will continue to monitor demand and work with governments and industry partners to ensure we strike the right balance between connectivity and value for money for taxpayers.”
