Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may have already given his verdict on Anthony Elanga’s possible exit.

Elanga broke into the United first team last season when he played a significant role across the campaign, especially for a player of his age. The 20-year-old already has 36 senior appearances, and he has contributed with a handfull of important goals. But amid increased competition this season, he is now being linked with a loan move away from the club.

Borussia Dortmund and Everton have both been credited with interest in a temporary deal, but it remains to be seen whether the forward will be allowed to leave, especially with the Red Devils only expected to able to strengthen with loan and cut-price transfers this month, recently signing Wout Weghorst on a short-term deal from Burnley.

Interestingly, Ten Hag spoke about the need for depth earlier this month when asked about Elanga. “I know we have good players and I know a lot of clubs will have an interest in players who are not so often playing for us, but we need the squad,” he explained. “We need depth in the squad, especially in the front line.”

Those comments would suggest Elanga is unlikely to be allowed to leave the club, but there are other factors. The player himself may be keen to play more regular first-team football, and that will surely be factored in and, no doubt, talks will take place between Elanga and Ten Hag to establish the best path for the youngster.

It may also depend who else departs the club, with Facundo Pellistri another being linked with a departure during the January window. Pellistri is more likely to be allowed to leave than Elanga, given the Swede has played a bigger role for United so far this season.
