Manchester Marathon 2023: road closures and disruptions to bus services - full list of travel advice

The Manchester Marathon is one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar for the city. Thousands of runners will take to the streets, and thousands more will watch on.

As with previous years, the Manchester Marathon can only take place safely for runners and spectators if there are a number of road closures. Organisers have worked to limit the disruption, but some roads will need to be closed for many hours to ensure this safety.

Some roads are set to be closed from Saturday April 15 until late on race day. This is Sunday April 16.

Below we have the full list of roads closed, including when roads will reopen. Here’s what you need to know.

Public transport

Race organisers recommend using Manchester’s public transport links to get around on event day. This includes using the city Metrolink tram network.

Transport for Greater Manchester says that the nearest stop to the start line for the Marathon is Old Trafford, located on the Altrincham line. Services operate at a six-minute frequency on the Altrincham line. Alternatively, you may wish to travel to Trafford Bar or Imperial War Museum for the start line. No stations will be closed for the marathon.

However, participants are advised not to travel to Wharfside, Exchange Quay or Pomona. This is because you will not be able to cross the race route to reach the start point.
