The local council elections in Manchester are just around the corner - when will it take place?

The deadline for registering to vote in the 2022 local council election in Manchester is two weeks away.

The elections will take place in early May, so that too is also coming fast.

When is the 2022 local election?

The local government elections to take place in Manchester is on Thursday, May 5 2022.

The deadline to be registered to vote for this election is Thursday, April 14 2022.

The deadline to submit your postal vote application is April 19 2022 at 5pm and the deadline to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf is also at 5pm, but a week later on April 26.

How can I make sure I am eligible to vote?

Registering online will ensure you get on the electoral register so you can vote in upcoming referendums or elections.

You can register online on the official government website, with the website stating it should take around five minutes to complete your registration.

When completing your online registration, you will need to have your national insurance number to successfully register.

All you need to do is go onto the government website, on the ‘register’ to vote section. When there, scroll down to the ‘register online’ tab, with a big green square that says ‘register online’, click that and begin.

You will be asked questions such as where do you live, and what is your nationality, among other things.

Who can register?

In order to register, you must hit certain criteria.

In England, you must be at least 16 years old, and must also be one of the following:

  • A British citizen
  • An Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
  • A Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
  • A citizen of another country living in Scotland or Wales who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission

Can I vote by post?

Anyone who is registered to vote in Manchester can vote by post.

You can download a postal vote application form, from the official Manchester council website.

When completed, you can either email your completed form as an attachment to [email protected] or send it via post to: Electoral Registration Officer, Electoral, Services Unit, Manchester City Council, Lawton Street, Openshaw, Manchester M11 2EZ.

Alternatively, if you do not want to vote via post anymore, you can also visit the Manchester Council website to cancel your postal vote. You must complete a form, and the website states it should take around 20 minutes to complete.
