The joke was in reference to Ms Pinkett-Smith’s hair-loss condition , alopecia, which she was diagnosed as having in 2018.

Rock said: “Jada, I love, ‘G.I. Jane 2’, I can’t wait to see it,”

The camera cut to Jada’s husband Will Smith, and initially it looked like he was laughing.

Around 10-15 seconds later, Smith walked on stage, striking Rock across the face before calmly walking back to his seat, saying “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

Smith went on to win an Oscar, for his portrayal of the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, in the movie ‘King Richard’.
