Manchester United look set to bring in Besiktas frontman Wout Weghorst on loan this transfer window, according to widespread reports. The Burnley forward, on loan in Turkey at present, is believed to become the Red Devils’ second January recruit following the arrival of Jack Butland last week. Weghorst has scored nine times in 18 appearances for Besiktas and is expected to come in as a stopgap until the summer window.

Erik ten Hag has already admitted he would like to sign a striker this month following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in November, although he recently revealed that ‘financial criteria’ will impact the club’s recruitment plans in the window.

With all that in mind, we’ve rounded up the latest reports on Weghorst’s seemingly imminent move to United…

What’s been reported?

According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, Weghorst failed to show up for training on Wednesday and complained of ‘pains’. He allegedly had planned to leave the country but had been denied by Besiktas.

Meanwhile, the Guardian claims a deal in principle has been agreed verbally between United and the Turkish club to end the striker’s loan move early, with the Red Devils set to pay €3m (£2.7m). The Mirror also reports that United have agreed to a fee with Besiktas, but the loan move to the Red Devils is being held up as Besiktas won’t sign off on the transfer until replacement Vincent Aboubakar completes his move from Al-Nassr. The outlet adds there is a chance Weghorst could be available for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Marco van Basten has warned United against bringing in too many Dutch signings, with Ten Hag tending to recruit players with experience in the Eredivisie during his time at Old Trafford.

“It can become dangerous if you have too many Dutch people and things are not going well," claimed Van Basten, when speaking to Ziggo Sport. “You also saw that at Barcelona, when they had five Dutch people. Then it will work against you. Ten Hag has to be careful with that.

"I have my doubts [about Weghorst]. Take a look at Luuk de Jong. That is really a striker that you can play through the air. I don’t think Weghorst is very strong in that regard. He can score a header, but he is more of a boy who can do something with his enthusiasm and force.
