Erik ten Hag said Manchester United will have ‘more or less’ the same squad for Monday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Wigan Athletic, as they had for last week’s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

United travel to the DW Stadium for the first time since a 4-0 win on New Year’s Day 2013, when Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie both scored braces. The sides have met twice since then, at Wembley and Old Trafford in cup competitions, with United winning on both occasions.

Ten Hag could certainly do with a comfortable victory on Monday night amid a disappointing away run. The Red Devils haven’t won any of the last five on the road, including that defeat to Forest at the end of 2023.

Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Mason Mount all missed that game through injury and Ten Hag’s update in his pre-match press conference suggested all six won’t be rushed back for the trip to Wigan, despite Martinez, Casemiro, Martinez and Mount recently returning to training.

Luke Shaw also missed the Forest game with a knock and is a doubt for the FA Cup encounter. Rasmus Hojlund was another who didn’t feature, with the Dane absent through illness. Despite Ten Hag’s comments, Hojlund is expected to be back against Wigan after he was seen at Carrington this week, although it’s not clear if Anthony Martial, who has been out for almost a month due to illness, will be back.

One player who will be involved is Andre Onana, with Ten Hag confirming the goalkeeper won’t be meeting up with the Cameroon squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. Sofyan Amrabat has also been included in Morocco’s roster for the tournament and it’s unclear when he will travel to Ivory Coast with the squad, although the midfielder has missed the last two games with a knock and is not expected to feature at the DW Stadium.

Jadon Sancho is another who won’t be involved in the squad, with the player still frozen out following his public criticism of Ten Hag in September. The winger might have completed his loan move to Borussia Dortmund by Monday night.

As for Wigan, manager Sean Maloney could be without striker Stephen Humphrys, who missed the 1-1 draw against Barnsley on New Year’s Day due to a hip issue. Scott Smith also sat the game out with a calf problem.

Left-back Tom Pearce and midfielder Jason Kerr will definitely miss out for Wigan, who currently sit 17th in League One and have recorded just one win in the last six games.

Doubts: Humphrys, Smith (Wigan); Shaw, Amrabat, Hojlund, Martial (United). Ruled out: Pearce, Kerr (Wigan); Maguire, Lindelof, Martinez, Malacia, Casemiro, Mount, Sancho (United).
