Louis van Gaal’s time at Manchester United wasn’t a particularly successful one, but not of his signings disappointed.
The experienced Dutch boss arrived at Old Trafford in 2014, hoping to take United back to where they needed to be after a failed David Moyes experiment.
In his first season at the club, van Gaal managed to improve to a fourth place finish, but it all went wrong in the back-end of the second season.
United missed out on the top four and had to settle for an FA Cup win before van Gaal was sent on his way in 2016.
He has since returned to his post as Netherlands boss, but what has happened to the 13 senior signings he made during his time at Old Trafford?

9. Radamel Falcao
Signing on a loan fee worth just under £7million, Radamel Falcao simply didn’t work out. He only netted four times in 29 appearances and would go on to have an equally disappointing spell with Chelsea. Falcao went on to have a good spell with Galatasaray before joining Rayo Vallecano last summer. He has scored five in 19 for the Vallecanos side and seems to be happy back in La Liga, where he initially impressed with Atletico Madrid.
10. Sergio Romero
Romero was signed as a back-up goalkeeper on a free transfer, and he served as a back-up keeper until for six years, racking up 61 appearances during that time. He left last year and has since joined Venezia. The Argentine certainly served his purpose and was a smart signing.
11. Luke Shaw
Luke Shaw Snapped up for around £30million, Shaw was one of van Gaal’s early signings and one of the best, in the long run. The Dutchman has a prickly relationship with Shaw, at times, branding him unfit. But Shaw has since become an integral player, racking up 210 appearances, and he remains a key player under Ralph Rangnick.
12. Ander Herrera
Herrera joined from Athletic Club for just under £30million, and he was another of the early signings during van Gaal’s reign. The Spaniard did well at Old Trafford, racking up 189 appearances, scoring 20 and assisting 27. He left at the end of his contract in 2019, and United will have been disappointed not to get some cash back, especially given he joined PSG, where he remains.
