Ange Postecoglou is hoping to prey on Manchester United’s inconsistency when Tottenham Hotspur travel to Old Trafford this weekend.

Spurs are aiming for a league double over the Red Devils having earned a 2-0 win on home soil in August. That victory was Postecoglou’s first as a Premier League manager and sent Tottenham on their way to an impressive start to the campaign.

While they are no longer top, Spurs are targeting a Champions League spot despite being written off once Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich. United, on the other hand, are suffering one of their worst top-flight seasons in recent memory.

Erik ten Hag’s side sit eighth and are just three defeats behind David Moyes’ tally in 2013-14 - the worst return since the Premier League began. A win would move United to within five points of Tottenham and put a marker down in the European race.

Ahead of the clash, Spurs boss Postecoglou highlighted Man United’s “inconsistent” form in 2023-24 as a reason to stay positive. The 58-year-old did, however, acknowledge Old Trafford still provides a stern test for visiting sides.

“Going into these games you expect that they'll be at their best,” he told reporters. “They've been inconsistent but, when they've played well, they're still a very good football side and they've certainly got some real quality throughout their team.

“And particularly at Old Trafford, it's going to be a difficult game. The supporters will be behind them. We're expecting a tough game, a big challenge for us. But so far in those big games at the biggest stadiums, we've done fairly well. But this will be another good challenge for us come Sunday.”

Postecoglou also relished the opportunity to add Timo Werner to his ranks for the trip to United. Spurs announced the German's arrival on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig.

"We thought it was a good opportunity for us when it was presented to me before the new year," Postecoglou added. "We knew that, with Sonny going away for such a period of time, we felt like we needed another player in the final third.

"And while centre-back was the priority, if an opportunity came, we wanted to move fairly quickly. Again, I had a good chat with Johan (Lange) about it and thought Timo would be a really good fit for us stylistically. He certainly has the kind of attributes we look for."
