Manchester United are edging closer to the loan signing of Burnley striker Wout Weghorst on a deal until the end of the season. The forward has spent the first-half of this season on loan in the Turkish Super Lig with Besiktas but is now poised for a temporary switch to Old Trafford.

He caught the eye playing at the World Cup with Holland last month under Louis van Gaal and is now being thrown a Premier League lifeline by the Red Devils. The 30-year-old scored just twice for the Clarets last term as they slipped into the Championship after joining the Lancashire outfit from Wolfsburg last January.

Weghorst outlined his ambition to ‘achieve’ the most he could in his career back in his Bundesliga days as he closes in on a dream switch to United. He told Kicker (via Bullinews): “My ambitions haven’t changed. I want to achieve the most possible. I wouldn’t leave Wolfsburg for just any club. It would have to be a really really good fit, even more so if we reach the Champions League.”

He has always wanted to play in the Premier League before his transfer to Burnley and he told their website after signing 12 months ago: “I have always wanted to play in the Premier League, to be a number nine and to be a striker. This is a great opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started this week.”

The Dutchman added: “It is always difficult to describe yourself but first and foremost I am a hardworking footballer, and I will give 100% every single time I play. I will do everything to help the team be successful. I am a striker with a strong mentality, I score goals and that is my biggest quality. I am good in the penalty box and I can link up play.”

Weghorst is someone who wants to play at the highest level possible and revealed he had no intention of dropping into the second tier after joining Besiktas over the summer, as per Lancashire Live: “I won’t go into the Championship – not that I feel too good for it, absolutely not. I am just really ambitious and also for the squad of the national team. The trainer (Louis Van Gaal, ex-Holland boss) wants us to play at a high level.”

United are back in action this weekend and face rivals City. Erik ten Hag’s side go into the game in great form and are unbeaten since returning from the World Cup break. They beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 last time out in the Carabao Cup courtesy of a brace from in-form Marcus Rashford and the other one from Antony.
