New Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney is reportedly keen to land former Manchester United goalkeeper Jack Butland this winter. The 30-year-old is currently on the books at Rangers.

According to a report by The Sun, the Blues are interested in a ‘move’ to re-sign him this winter. He has had two spells with the Midlands outfit in the past. United swooped to land him in January on loan to add cover and competition to their goalkeeping department. However, he didn’t make an appearance for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Butland played for Crystal Palace from 2021 until this past summer. He was released by the Eagles after his stint at Old Trafford and subsequently made the switch up to Scotland to join Rangers on a four-year deal.

Birmingham want to lure him away from Ibrox already though. Rooney will be looking to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad with some signings when the next window opens.

After replacing John Eustace last week, he said: “To get back into English football is great. Since speaking to Birmingham and seeing the ambitions of the Club, it excited me. I want to be successful; the Club wants to be successful. I am excited to get going and really look forward to the first game.

“I’m ready, I am committed. I am ready to take this Club forward. It is an honour to be here. My job is to get the players ready to go out and perform. Get the mentality right, to make sure we are consistent, consistency is everything in this league. I want to build a winning mentality.”

Rooney played for United from 2004 to 2017 after they signed him from Everton. He went on to play 559 games for the Red Devils and scored 253 goals.
