Thomas Frank claimed Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford on Saturday was ‘unfair’ after the Red Devils staged a dramatic late comeback at Old Trafford.

Brentford defended resolutely for 90 minutes as United found it impossible to find a way through their organised backline. Yet two injury-time goals from Scott McTominay changed all that and somehow meant United grabbed an undeserved three points.

Speaking after the game, Frank felt his side were incredibly unfortunate to leave Old Trafford with nothing, but added he was pleased for the under-pressure Erik ten Hag. “I think it was when you are leading 1-0 into injury-time and then lose, I think that is unfair,” the Brentford boss said. “I think if you win there you say ‘well done, tough game, deserved win for Brentford’.

“When they equalised you probably say 1-1, probably fair but when you lead that long - ok, we were under pressure second half…

“I think we played close to a perfect first half, very impressive in the high press and very brave on the ball, good on the counters, defended well. I think it was a well-deserved 1-0 lead at half-time.

“Second half, we came more under pressure, of course we are playing against Man United at Old Trafford and they have to win. We aimed to go a little more on the high pressure, but overall good and we gave nothing away until they scored when they cut back [for the first goal].

“I think Christian Norgaard is this close to touching it and then it will drop to our striker and it will never be a shot, but it flicks on and then they score. I know it is good for the manager so I am happy for Erik, but of course not happy for ourselves that we didn’t win. When you are on this end, it is brutal but that is football and it happens.”
