Man Utd player ratings v Brentford- One scores 8/10 but two earn 4/10 - gallery

Manchester United earned an incredible 2-1 victory at home to Brentford on Saturday in the Premier League.

The Red Devils had trailed for most of the game, in what was another disappointing display but Erik ten Hag's side, but two injury-time goals from Scott McTominay somehow saw United take a crucial three points.

It was a slow start to proceedings at Old Trafford, with two Aaron Hickey shots from the edge of the box the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock.

It took until the 26th minute for a shot on target, but it resulted in the first goal of the contest. Casemiro lost possession in the centre of the pitch, which resulted in Yoane Wissa launching a Brentford counter-attack. The attacker’s pass into the box should have been cleared by Victor Lindelof, but his kick instead didn’t even get out of the United box. Seconds later and the ball rolled to Mathias Jensen, who shot powerfully towards goal. It was another one that Andre Onana won’t want to see again, as the goalkeeper got a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out.

United couldn’t offer much in response, with Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount seeing shots blocked, while Marcus Rashford’s effort in the 39th minute was comfortably held by Brentford stopper Thomas Trakosha. But it was the Bees who ended the half on top, with Bryan Mbuemo, Wissa and Christian Norgaard all having attempts, none of which tested Onana.

Christian Eriksen was introduced at half-time and had a powerful shot saved in the early stages of the half, not long before Marcus Rashford cut inside and fired wide. It was a pattern that continued through the second half, as Diogo Dalot and then Hojlund had shots that sailed off target.

Fernandes did test Strakosha from outside the area as Brentford sat deeper and deeper. The Portugal international then curled an effort off target in the 79th minute, as did Alejandro Garnacho, after cutting inside from the left flank.

Brentford didn't offer much going forward in the second half but Neal Maupay and then Norgaard forced Onana to make smart saves and tip the ball over the bar.

As United entered the final stages, they looked set to have found the breakthrough goal, after Nathan Collins inadvertently steered the ball into his own goal, but Antony Martial was flagged offside in the build-up and it was rightly ruled out.

It looked set to be another frustrating day for United, until a remarkable injury-time turnaround from the hosts. McTominay, introduced in the 87th minute, controlled the ball inside the box following good work from Garnacho down the left, before the Scotland international fired a powerful effort beyond Strakosha.

That strike in the third minute of injury-time seemed to have saved United's blushes, but four minutes later and McTominay again popped up with a game-changing goal, as he nodded in after Harry Maguire's initial flick-on at the front post.

Here's how we rated United's players..
